Baseball Breaks Game Open Late, Holds On For 8-5 Win Over Oxy
Los Angeles, Calif. – Freshman first baseman Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) broke a 2-2 tie with a solo homer in the eighth and senior designated hitter Ben Cohen (Camarillo, Calif. - pictured) added a three-run double in the ninth as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team took an 8-5 win over Occidental in the first of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-3-1 overall and 7-3 in the SCIAC, while Occidental slips to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the SCIAC.
Bruml, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, broke a 2-2 tie with a solo homer to lead off the top of the eighth inning, his second round-tripper of the year. After relief pitcher Leo Rosetti (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) used a double-play ball to erase a walk in the bottom of the eighth and keep the score 3-2, Cohen was able to break the game open with a three-run double after two walks (one intentional) and a hit-by-pitch to Bruml loaded the bases.
Sophomore catcher Coleman Lukas (Berkeley, Calif.) tacked on an RBI single to score Cohen and make the score 7-2, and senior center fielder Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif.) added an RBI single to close out the inning.
The insurance runs proved to be vital, as Occidental opened the bottom of the ninth with three straight singles, two of which were in the infield, and a fielding error cut the lead to 8-3 with nobody out. After a Rosetti strikeout, A.J. Lubinao drew a walk to cut the lead to 8-4 and bring the tying run to the plate, but Pedro Aldape could only bring home one run with a forceout, and Rosetti struck out cleanup hitter Scott Hong to end the game.
The Sagehens were trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth, but Bruml led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. One out later, second baseman E.J. Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) doubled into left-center field to plate Bruml with the tying run. Lopez finished the day 2-for-2 with an RBI and three walks.
Pomona-Pitzer struck first in the top of the third inning, as Munzer led off with a double, and after moving to third base on a groundout, came home on an RBI single from senior third baseman James Campbell (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.).
Occidental was able to get to senior pitcher Travis Rooke-Ley (Eugene, Ore.) for two runs in the fourth inning as Pedro Aldape led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Scott Hong. Hong then stole second to put two runners in scoring position, and the first came home on an RBI groundout from Jonathon Brooks. Hong followed by coming home on a throwing error to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, before Rooke-Ley was able to pitch out of the inning with no further damage.
Rooke-Ley allowed four hits and two runs while striking out five in seven innings of work to get the win and improve to 5-0 on the year. He did allow two earned runs, doubling his total from the last four starts combined, when the only earned run he allowed was in a 17-1 win over Caltech. Rosetti closed out the last two innings to get his first save of the year, as all three of his runs were unearned.
The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer, beginning at 11 a.m.
