Sagehens Hold On For 8-7 Win Over Vanguard
Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Austin Strong (Honolulu, Hawaii) made a save in the final seconds of regulation as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team held off Vanguard for an 8-7 win on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) scored midway through the fourth quarter with what turned out to be the game-winning goal, as the Sagehens improve to 3-13 on the season with the win, including 2-1 at the Claremont Convergence. Yesterday, Pomona-Pitzer defeated Chapman 17-14 in overtime and lost 10-7 to Johns Hopkins.
The Sagehens led 3-0 after the first quarter on goals from Robert Chew (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Travis Lalrsen (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.). Vanguard, though, was able to pull within 4-3 at the half and then led 5-4 early in the second half, before the Sagehens led 6-5 at the end of the third.
After the Lions tied it early in the fourth quarter, sophomore Dylan O'Connell (River Forest, Ill.) put Pomona-Pitzer ahead to stay and Hudnall followed up with an insurance goal. However, Vanguard pulled within 8-7 and after the Sagehens did not score on a two-man advantage, the Lions were able to call a timeout with 25 seconds left to set up a potential tying goal. Strong, though, was able to tip a shot from Kevin Burzynski off the crossbar and the Sagehens were able to run out the clock.
Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) was the only member of the Sagehens with two goals, while Strong finished with eight saves to get his first collegiate win in goal.
Pomona-Pitzer completes play at the Claremont Convergence this evening with a 5 p.m. match against Fresno Pacific.
