WWPA Championship Gets Underway Today
San Diego, Calif. - The sixth-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team faces 11th-seeded La Verne on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the first round of the WWPA Championships, which are being held at UC San Diego.
The winner of that match will move on to face third-seeded Santa Clara on Friday, which will also take place at 3 p.m.
The Sagehens are coming off a dramatic SCIAC Championship this weekend, as they defeated Redlands 11-9 in the semifinals and neighboring rival CMS 7-4 in the championship game on Sunday. The CMS contest came right down to the wire, as the score was tied 4-4 after three quarters, asn the Sagehens led just 5-4 with a minute to play before sealing the game with two goals in the final 48 seconds.
Senior goalie Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (for all sports) after leading Pomona-Pitzer to the title with 14 saves in the championship match, including six in the decisive fourth quarter (without allowing a goal). Pokorny is returning to his home town of San Diego for the final WWPA Championship of his career.
As a result of the championship win, the Sagehens returned to top of the Collegiate Water Polo Division III rankings, where they spent three weeks earlier in the season before falling out of the top spot after losses to Johns Hopkins and CMS.
The winner of the WWPA Championship receives an automatic bid to the Collegiate Water Polo championship, which will be held on Dec. 2-3 at Cal-Berkeley. Loyola Marymount is the top seed, and host UC San Diego is the No. 2 seed in a challenging field.
