Rodriguez Named Division III Coach Of The Year, Four Sagehens Named All-American
Claremont, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo Coach Alex Rodriguez (pictured) was named the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division III Coach of the Year, while four players earned All-America honors it was announced this week.
Senior goalie Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) and junior center Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) were named first-team Division III All-Americans by the ACWPC, while juniors Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) and Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) were named to the second team.
The Sagehens were honored after a year which saw them capture the SCIAC Men's Water Polo championship with a dramatic 7-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the championship game. Pokorny had 13 saves in that win, which helped him earn SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week honors.
Rodriguez set up a challenging schedule for the Sagehens, which included multiple matches with top-five opponents USC, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara and helped his team crack the national top 20 (all divisions) after a win over then-No. 12 Navy.
Cox was the leading scorer for Pomona-Pitzer all season long, finishing with 65 goals, while Hudnall and Moore were regular two-way contributors. Hudnall was the lone Sagehen to earn All-Western Water Polo Association honors (second team), while Moore joined Hudnall and Cox as first-team All-SCIAC selections.
The Sagehens look to have a strong 2012 season next year with Cox, Hudnall and Moore all back for their senior seasons. Pomona-Pitzer loses only two seniors - Pokorny and Jaron Moler (Carmichael, Calif.), who capped off his career by scoring the game-winning goal in the SCIAC championship game and earning a spot on the WWPA All-Tournament team.
