Claremont, Calif. - Freshman center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) was named third-team All-West Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, it was announced today.
Bleichner batted a team-high .394 for the Sagehens during the 2012 season, including a whopping .481 in SCIAC games. She also added two homers, 25 RBI (17 of which came in league games) and played outstanding defense in center field, where she had 11 assists on the year.
In addition to her big numbers, she also came up big in the clutch on several occasions for the Sagehens, including walk-off hits to defeat La Verne and CMS in big conference match-ups. She also was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week (all sports) after a stretch in which she had hits in nine straight at-bats, beginning with her final three in a win over nationally ranked Redlands and her first six in a doubleheader sweep of Occidental.
Bleichner's efforts helped Pomona-Pitzer set a school record with 22 wins (22-19) and qualify for the SCIAC Tournament for the first time since 2008. She was part of an impressive freshman class with six regular starters, four of whom earned All-SCIAC honors.
