Sagehens Host La Verne In Important SCIAC Contest

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team hosts La Verne this afternoon at 4 p.m. in a game which is pivotal to its postseason hopes.

The Sagehens come into the contest locked in a three-way tie for second place at 4-3 in conference play (along with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands). Occidental is also tied in the loss column at 3-3, leaving four teams fighting it out for the final three spots in the SCIAC Tournament (first place Cal Lutheran is all but assured a bid at 7-0 in league play).

Pomona-Pitzer defeated La Verne 4-0 in the first meeting back on Sept. 14, with all four goals coming in the first half of play. Freshman Samantha Thompson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored the game-winner in only the second minute, her first career goal.

The Sagehens put themselves in strong position to qualify for the postseason with their 2-1 win over Whittier on Monday, in a game that was rescheduled after being rained out on Wednesday. Sophomore midfielder Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) had a goal and an assist, scoring the first goal of the game and then feeding senior forward Traci Lopez (Santa Fe, N.M.) with the tiebreaking goal with three minutes left in the first half.

Lopez currently leds the Sagehens with eight goals on the year, while Tao has contributed five goals and a team-high five assists.
