Yamasaki Named SCIAC Freshman of the Year
Claremont, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter/setter Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) earned the SCIAC Freshman of the Year honor in a vote of the league's coaches.
Yamasaki was also named to the All-SCIAC second team and was an honorable mention all-region selection from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
Yamasaki displayed her versatility all season long for the Sagehens, leading the team in kills with 230, while also finishing second in both digs (266) and assists (247), putting her in the rare 200-200-200 club in those three categories.
Late in the season, Yamasaki achieved another rare feat when she had a triple-double in only three sets in a 3-0 victory over Redlands, as she finished with 15 assists, 10 digs and 10 kills. She also filled in as the full-time setter for one weekend when both of the Sagehens' regular setters were injured and averaged over 30 assists, tallying 123 in four matches (Whittier, NYU, Chapman and Caltech).
As a hitter, Yamasaki was the only Sagehen to record 20 kills in a match, when she had 21 (with only three errors) against East Texas Baptist in only her fifth collegiate competition. She also had 18 kills against Willamette, and 17 against Whittier and Redlands, which were the four highest totals for a Sagehen this season.
In addition, Yamasaki's season high in digs was 20 against Pacific, joining Heidi Leonard (Del Mar, Calif.) as the only Sagehens to reach the 20-dig plateau.
