Sagehens End Undefeated SCIAC Regular Season With Fourth Overtime Win

Whittier, Calif. - The top-ranked (Division III) Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team ended the regular season undefeated in the SCIAC with an 11-10 triple-overtime (sudden death) win over Whittier on Saturday, scoring the game-winner on a man-up goal from senior co-captain Perri Hopkins (Agoura, Calif.).

With the win, the Sagehens conclude the regular season with an 18-16 overall record, a 7-0 record in the SCIAC and a 12-0 record against Division III teams. Four of their seven conference wins came in overtime this year (including a road win over Occidental and home wins over La Verne and Cal Lutheran).

This was the first of Pomona-Pitzer's wins to go into sudden death overtime, though, as the score remained 10-10 after the first two extra sessions before the Sagehens were able to prevail in the third overtime on Hopkins' goal, which was blocked by the Whittier goalkeeper but still snuck past her and over the line.

Freshman Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) and senior co-captain Annie Oxborough-Yankus (Wallingford, Conn.) led the way with three goals apiece for the Sagehens, who led 6-2 after the first quarter before going into a long scoring drought which was broken by Oxborough-Yankus late in the third as Whittier was able to come back and tie the score 7-7 after three.

Woodward and Oxborough-Yankus had back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to put the Sagehens ahead by one, but Whittier tied the score up late in regulation, forcing the overtime.

Pomona-Pitzer will return to action next week for the SCIAC Tournament, where it will be top seed and will open against eighth-seeded Caltech on Friday. The championship match will take place on Sunday, with the official SCIAC champion (which is decided on a point system combining regular season and tournament results) moving on to the NCAA Tournament.
